چکیده

Editor’s Note: Members of the Journal of Palliative Medicine editorial board include individuals with immense insight, experience and knowledge concerning care near the end of life. As such, I have invited editorial board members to contribute their thoughts to the “Notes from the Editor” column. Over the coming year different board members will share their thoughts on a particular topic of relevance to palliative care and hospice professionals. The first column is authored by my friend and colleague, Dr. James Tulsky, from the Program on the Medical Encounter and Palliative Care, Durham VA Medical Center, and the Department of Medicine and Institute on Care at the End of Life, Duke University. I first met Dr. Tulsky in 1996 when we were both selected as Faculty Scholars in the Project on Death in America. A general internist by training, his passion lies in understanding the nuances of doctor-patient communication so to enhance physician education and clinical care.

It is important for leaders to stay grounded in reality and effective as their success grows. Humility, gratitude, and appre...

We are interested in why these higher bids occur. We find that bids of firms from developing countries are higher in cases where the transaction displays “nat...

Hubris syndrome: an acquired personality disorder? A study of US Presidents and UK Prime Ministers over the last 100 years.

Charisma, charm, the ability to inspire, persuasiveness, breadth of vision, willingness to take risks, grandiose aspirations and bold self-confidence—these qualities are often associated with successful leadership. Yet there is another side to this profile, for these very same qualities can be marked by impetuosity, a refusal to listen to or take advice and a particular form of incompetence whe...

The Hubris Hypothesis: Empirical Evidence

The Hubris Hypothesis is grounded on a failure to adequately account for the winner’s curse, which leads to overbidding. Surprisingly few papers have attempted to develop a direct empirical test of the presence of overbidding in M&A contests. We develop two such tests in this paper. Our results strongly support the existence of overbidding. JEL classification: G34
